— “There is a moment in your 20s when you know what it means to love rightly, but not how to do it, and then you begin to learn. I’m less worried about missing something these days. I’m not worried about missing the party. I’m not worried about missing a connection with someone I don’t know. And I’m a lot less worried about missing a connection with someone I do.
It’s a clearer choice now: who I talk to and when, who I love and how well. What matters most isn’t the acquaintance on the train, but whom I come home to when I get off it, and how she smiles when she sees me. We don’t get do-overs, so I want to get it right the first time.”
Melissa Febos, the author of the memoir “Whip Smart,” teaches writing at Sarah Lawrence, the New School and New York University.
